Mythological City of Indraprastha: Delhi

Delhi is the capital of the Asian subcontinent of India, which is located in the northern part of the country. This city is known for its richness in history and culture and has also been mentioned in the Hindu mythology of Mahabharata. Its oldest incarnation can be seen in the form of the historical city of Indraprastha, the capital city of the Pandavas when the Mahabharata took place.

Delhi is the home of the legislative, executive and judiciary branches of the country. Delhi is also best known as a country’s microcosm and one of the world’s top global cities. It is vital in the field of commerce, education, art, fashion, healthcare, finance, media, tourism and research and development. Delhi’s weather is of an extreme nature, either too hot or too cold.

Delhi has many places where one can go and visit for some peace of mind and relaxation. This city is rich in its history, and therefore a person visiting Delhi should make it a point to visit certain historically essential places in the Indian capital. One such place is the Red Fort, built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, who had also famously constructed the Taj Mahal in memory of his deceased wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

Delhi is considered one of the oldest cities in the world. Other well-known cities of Jerusalem and Varanasi also fall in this category. According to legends, the city is supposed to be 5000 years old or more. Also, some historians say that Delhi was destroyed and built around 11 times in total.

The river of the Yamuna, which is believed to be the holiest river according to religious mythologies, flows across this part of the country. Delhi falls on the Gangetic plains and is considered to be as flat as the rest of the tables. The Aravalli hills also form an arc on the left section of the city. On the western bank of the town is a crowded region of Old Delhi, and in the southwest part of the city lies the region of New Delhi, which mainly comprises broad roads lined with trees along it. New Delhi was built by the British to rule the empire they set up, known as the East Indian Company.

On a broad scale, Delhi is not a difficult city to move around with its main roads and highways. The Outer Ring Road and Ring Road are important roads that connect different parts of the city. In the city’s southern part, the most important districts are seated on either the inner or outer ring roads.
