Digha: Distance, History & Weather

Digha is a beach town in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is a very common vacation spot among people from Kolkata. Most of the beaches in this region do not permit people to swim in its water. The water here is part of the Bay of Bengal. There are a number of buses that can easily take you from Kolkata to Digha. The journey takes only around 3 to 4 hours of time and therefore people from Kolkata generally choose Digha as a weekend getaway destination.

The beaches of Digha are although not as famous as many other beaches of India such as the ones of Goa and Pondicherry, they are certainly very popular among the people of the Eastern part of the country. Digha is a part of the Eastern Midnapore district and lies in the northern section of the Bay of Bengal. It is also one of the most popular sea resorts of West Bengal. It lies at an altitude of 6 meters above sea level.

Digha is situated at  a distance of around 183 kms from Kolkata or Howrah through Mecheda and around 234 kms through Kharagpur. This closeness from the metropolis has certainly contributed to this little place’s emergence into a well known Indian beach destination with a number of hotels and tourist lodges located in the region.

The region of Digha was earlier known as Beerkul. This name was mentioned in the letters of Warren Hastings as Brighton of the East. In the year 1923, the English tourist John Frank Smith visited this part of the country, was impressed and started living here. He convinced the Chief Minister of the state of West Bengal, Bidhan Chandra Roy, that he should develop this place as a beach resort. Since it is a coastal region, the weather this region experiences is mostly hot and humid.

Winter months are probably the best time to visit this beach town. Digha is divided into Old Digha and New Digha. If one has plans of swimming in water, they should keep Old Digha out of their agenda. The summer months go on from April till June and the maximum temperature generally is 37 degrees Celsius. The cold wind from the sea keeps this region cool in the evenings.

The monsoon period arrives in July and continues till the end of September. Digha sees average rainfall accompanied with high humidity in the monsoon season. Winter arrives in October and continues till the end of February. During this time, the temperature stays between 24 and 3 degrees Celsius. Except for summer, you can plan a trip to this place at any time of the year since the weather stays pleasant.
