Digha is a beach town located in the Indian state of West Bengal. The water body adjacent to it is the Bay of Bengal. Digha, of course, stands nowhere if compared to the well-known beaches such as Goa, Pondicherry and the like. But for the people of West Bengal, this beach town is the most conveniently reachable vacation destination.
The weather of Digha is typically coastal, which means it is primarily hot and humid throughout the year. It is possible to reach Digha easily from the Indian metropolitan city of Kolkata using a bus or a train. By train, it takes barely 2 to 3 hours of time to reach the Digha. By bus, it takes around 4 hours to reach the beach town. It is a pretty decent place to visit for a weekend and enjoy.
Swimming in the water of this place is not allowed because of the strong undercurrents present in the water. There are mainly three seasons in Digha. These are Summer, Monsoon and Winter. The summer season starts in April and goes on till June, the maximum temperature being 37 degrees Celsius.
Although the summers are really hot and humid, the cold wind blowing from the sea keeps the place cool and pleasant. The monsoon weather begins in the month of July and goes on till the end of September. The beach town experiences average rainfall and high humidity in this season. October sees the entry of winter, which goes on till the end of February.
The temperature stays between 24 degrees Celsius and -3 degrees Celsius. July to March is the best time of the year to visit this part of the country as the Monsoon and Winter months are comparatively more pleasant than the month of summer.
Shankarpur is known as a pristine beach which is only 14 km east of the town of Digha. Also, it is known as a fishing harbour. On weekends, this beach sees more people than on weekdays. In the mornings, you can locate fishermen in the seas pulling out high nets from the sea. Sea fish is fresh and tasty in this region. Also, fish is more or less included in the staple diet of the state of West Bengal.
Subarnarekha River drains into the Bay of Bengal only 12 km away from the border between Orissa and Bengal. This is growing into a popular destination with time among tourists of Digha.
Treasury is a small delta in the Bay of Bengal and is located only 6 km away from Digha, again on the Bengal-Orissa border. It is a quiet place nearby the sea as well as the Subarnarekha river.
