Delhi to Shimla, Travel Guide and Ways to Travel

Delhi is situated on the bank of the holy Yamuna River and falls in the National Capital Region in India. It also has the Aravali Mountains towards its south. There are a number of tourist destinations in the city and around it that attract many tourists. Agra’s Taj Mahal and Rajasthan’s Ranthambhore National Park and historical and religious monuments are some examples. The best part is that all these places are so easily accessible from Delhi. A network of buses, trains, and private taxis connects these regions. Traveling by metro is also an option inside the city since this transport mode connects most parts of the city.

Shimla is the capital city of Himachal Pradesh and a very popular tourist destination and honeymoon location. Shimla also sometimes referred to as ‘Simla’ was named the erstwhile summer capital during the reign of the British Empire. It is a neighboring city of Delhi with a distance of just 370 kilometers between the two cities. The name ‘Shimla’ has been derived from ‘Shyamali Devi’ an incarnation of the Hindu Goddess Kali. The Kali Bari Temple previously located at Jakhoo Hill was later moved near the Mall and is considered one of the holiest pilgrim destinations in Shimla.

Daily flights are available from Delhi to Shimla at a decently affordable rate. Kingfisher flights operate on this route and can fly you to Shimla within just 1.5 hours. Trains like Amritsar Express, Punjab Mail, Jam Jat Express are some of the many trains that run from Delhi to Shimla. Government and privately operated bus services are also an option which takes somewhere around 10 hours to complete the journey. Since the distance between the cities is not very much, it is possible to cover the distance by cab in only 9 hours.  

The city is also known as ‘The Queen of Hill Station and is bounded by Jakhoo Hill, Bantony Hill, Observatory Hill, Prospect Hill, Summer Hill, Invererarm Hill, and Elysium Hill. A part of the northwest Himalayas, its cool disposition is quite an attraction. Hills, dense forests, beautiful sceneries, and green and red apple orchards describe Shimla in short. The architecture of Shimla buildings is popular for its Victorian style. Buildings made of timber are relatively common here. The city has recently been named one of the most visited tourist getaway destinations in the northern part of India. Mountaineering lovers are also frequent visitors in Shimla. The perfect time of the year to trek here is between March and August.
