Delhi: The City of Indraprastha

Delhi is the capital of India with the second maximum population in the country after Mumbai. It is also the fourth most populated metropolitan city in the entire world. The river Yamuna runs across the city of New Delhi. The Aravalli mountains form an arc in the western part of the Indian capital city. The city is a part of the NCR is also known as the National Capital Region which includes regions such as Gurgaon, Noida and Faridabad. 

Delhi is the largest commercial hub in the northern part of the country and has an estimated net State Domestic Product of Rs.157, 817 crores. It has an amount of 630,000 crores in PPP terms. In the year 2010, the national capital’s per capita income was 135,820, which was the third highest in India after that of Chandigarh and Goa. The Gross domestic product of Delhi on an average grew by a percentage of 10.7 between the years 2007 and 2012. This made it one of the fastest growing cities in the country. Delhi is, in fact, one of the fastest growing cities in the world. 

According to the Economic survey of Delhi held in the year 2005 to 2006, 70.95% of Delhi’s gross SDP is contributed by the tertiary sector followed by its secondary and primary sectors, with respective contributions of 25.20% and 3.85%. Delhi’s working population comprises 32.82% of the city’s population, and this has increased by 52.52% between the years 1991 and 2001. The unemployment rate of the Indian capital decreased from 12.57% in the years 1999–2000 to 4.63% in the year 2003. In December of 2004, around 636,000 people were registered with several employment exchange programs. 

In the year 2001 the total working population in the public and non-government sectors and the quasi-government sector was approximately 620,000, and 219,000 were employed by the private sector. Information technology, hotels, banking, telecommunications, media and tourism are the most important private sector industries.  Construction, health and community services, power, and real estate are also important for Delhi’s economical growth. The retail industry of the city is a very developed one and is also the largest and fastest growing retail section of the country. The manufacturing industry also grew relatively as these units were set up by the consumer goods companies in the city. 

Delhi’s airport is the Indira Gandhi International Airport located in the southwest part of the city. The region has a very mixed culture since people from around the world stay in the region; either for work or for education. Some simply love the natural splendor of the place.There are a number of tourist destinations, some of which are of great historical importance such as Red Fort, Humayun’s Tomb and Qutub Minar.
