Delhi is the national capital and political capital of India and is a part of the National Capital Region. The Yamuna River which is one of the most sacred rivers according to the Hindu mythologies flows through the region. The Aravalli Hills form an arc in the western part of the region. In terms of population, Delhi has been named second after Mumbai.
Delhi is considered to be a big name in the IT field of the country. It is also the fourth most populated metropolis in the entire world. The NCR region also includes the neighboring regions such as Faridabad, Gurgaon, Noida and more. Hindi is the language spoken here which is also the national language of the country.
Delhi is believed to have been inhabited right from the 6th Century BC and is believed to be one of the oldest cities in the world. Throughout history, the beautiful city has been the capital of many empires in the past. Delhi is believed to be the same region where the capital of the Pandavas known as Indraprastha was situated during the time when the Mahabharata took place. It is a part of the Gangetic plains and is as flat as the other parts of the plain.
During the reign of the Delhi Sultanate, the city emerged as a cultural, political and commercial city. The climate of the city has an extreme nature; it is either too hot in summers or too cold in winters. The monsoon period of the year is probably the most pleasant time when there is a balance in the weather.
Delhi has a number of tourist destinations which attract many people from all around. The Red Fort is a monument which was built by the Mughal king, Shah Jahan, who had famously built the Taj Mahal in memory of his deceased wife. This fort was built using red sandstones and in Hindi it is also called ‘Lal Quila’. Delhi also has its own international airport called the Indira Gandhi International Airport which is situated in the southwest portion of the country’s capital region. Red Fort, Humayun’s Tomb and Qutab Minar are three world heritage sites which are located in Delhi.
India Gate and Jantar Mantar are other very popular tourist sites in the city. Jantar Mantar is an astronomical observatory of the 18th century. The Purana Quila is also visited frequently by tourists and is a fortress built in the 16th century. But it should be noted that the culture of the region is affected greatly by the mixed nature of the population of the city. Because of the many opportunities related to jobs and education and because of the beauty of the place, people from different corners of the world choose to settle down in Delhi.
