Munnar is a hill station located in the southern part of the country of India. The lush green hill station is bounded by the highest tea plantations in the entire country. Here, you will see layers of tea estates. The waterfalls, mountain mist and wildlife sanctuaries add a unique quality to the beauty of Munnar.
The mountains here have misty peaks with extensive tea estates and pleasant climates. Munnar is more of a sleepy village on top of the western ghats and is situated on the concourse of three mountain streams which are Nallathanni, Mudrapuzha and Kundala. Low drifting clouds and mist-filled valleys offer a picturesque view of this little heaven with a fantastic climate.
The mountain peaks with a touch of mist make the place look absolutely heavenly. Munnar is well known for its wild orchid, which is blue in colour and blooms once in twelve years. These are called Neelakurinchi. At this time of the year, the valleys develop a shade of violet. Munnar is also home to a rare mountain goat known as the Nilagiri Tahr.
Also, this hill station was once named the summer capital of British India in the southern part of the country. One unique quality of Munnar is how it has remained its touch with its old-world charm, which was present in the days of the British plantation. Munnar is a part of the hills of the western ghats, which is a mountain range which is a part of the Idukki district of the Kerala state in India. The town is strategically placed at the junction of three rivers, which is why the place was named Munnar, which originally means three rivers.
The town of Munnar is situated in the Kannan Devan Hills Village, located in Devikulam Taluk. This is the largest Panchayat in the district of Idukki and has an area of almost 557 square kilometres. Munnar does not have a railway station of its own, but railway stations closest to it are the ones of Aluva and Ernakulam, both of which are located approximately a distance of 140 km from the hill station. Also, Cochin International Airport is located quite close to Munnar, i.e. at a distance of around 105 km.
