Jaipur is a city of traditions and culture and is known as ‘The Pink City’ because of the palaces and temples situated in this part of the country. Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan and is the first planned city in the country, and that is one reason this city is historically significant. Also, it was first built as a walled city, but later, of course, it underwent significant changes.
Jaipur was a city built by the king of Amber known as Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh with the help of the head of architecture of his empire known as Vidyasagar Bhattacharya. This person was a Bengali architect and had good knowledge in the field. The city was built according to the Vastu shastra which is the science of architecture of the Vedic people. It should be noted that Jaipur was built as an ideal Hindu architecture with its eight-part mandala, also known as ‘pithapada’.
The king of Amber was known as a patron of astronomy, and this is visible in the planning of the city in which he used the number and its multiples in very many ways. ‘Nine’ was used to represent the nine planets of the universe. Nine rectangular-shaped structures had been built on both sides of the main bazaar or market.
Many gardens had also been designed which now can be located and are historical heritages of the region. Also, many forts had been built to accommodate the relatives of the royal family.
There are several well-known cultural sites in the Rajasthani capital city. The state’s culture has been repeatedly shaped by specific cultural centres such as Ravindra Manch and Jawahar Kala Kendra. The Albert Hall Museum, also known as Government Central Museum, exhibits specific artworks and antiques. All these cultural centres prefer to and have helped promote the unique culture of the Indian state of Rajasthan.
At Hawa Mahal, there is a government museum, and at Viratnagar, there is an art gallery. Hawa Mahal is the main palace of Jaipur in the main complex of the city where the king and all his queens used to live. The Town Hall, also known as Old Vidhan Sabha Bhawan, is also in the process of being converted into a museum.
Several statues can be located throughout the city, which depict the tradition and culture of this city. Jaipur has its original form of dance called the Jaipur Gharana of Kathak. Typical Jaipur delicacies would include the Missi Roti and Dal Baati Churma. The sweet dishes of Jaipur are well known throughout the country, and the range includes names such as acceptable, Moong Thal, Gajak, Chauguni ke laddu and Ghevar.
